City Council approves new transit plan

The City Council voted 8–3 on Tuesday to approve a comprehensive transit plan that city officials say will modernise public transportation and serve the fastest-growing corridors in the metro area.
The $2.3 billion initiative includes the expansion of light rail, 137 new electric buses, and improved transit hubs in underserved neighbourhoods.
Council members said the investment will strengthen Bahrain’s public transport network and deliver immediate air-quality benefitssupport cleaner transport as the new fleet and infrastructure enter service.
Officials expect the upgrades to ease traffic on major corridors during peak hours. The plan also prioritises services for low-income districts, improving access to jobs, schools, and healthcare.
